When a proxy goes silent: diagnosing timeouts step by step

Updated:

A proxy timeout means your software waited for a reply and none arrived before its time limit ran out. There is no refusal and no login prompt, only silence, which makes it harder to read than other errors. Either the packets are dropped somewhere on the way, or the proxy accepted the connection and did not answer quickly enough. Your job is to find out which stage goes quiet.

Why proxies time out

  • The local network drops the proxy port. Office, hotel and university Wi-Fi often discard traffic to uncommon ports instead of rejecting it, so the client waits until it gives up.
  • Your code's limit is too tight. A proxy in a faraway country needs a moment longer to complete the handshake. A 2–3 second limit can cut off a proxy that is perfectly healthy.
  • The proxy or the target is busy. The proxy accepts your connection, then waits for the website, and your timeout fires first.
  • A mistyped IP. If the typo lands on an address that never responds, you get silence rather than a refusal.

The outputs we recorded

Our test proxy accepted TCP connections and then never replied. We sent the same request with two different time limits; the address and login are shown as 203.0.113.10:8080 and user123:pass456.

What to try in each setup

  • Windows and Chrome: use the same proxy over your phone's mobile data. If the timeout disappears, your usual network is blocking it; continue with checking the proxy and the firewall.
  • Antidetect browsers: the built-in proxy check typically waits a fixed time. Run it a few times; if only some profiles fail, compare their proxy line with a profile that works.
  • Telegram: hanging on "connecting" after you add a proxy is often a timeout as well. Test the line in the checker before changing anything in Telegram (Telegram setup).
  • Python requests: pass timeout=(10, 30), which allows 10 seconds to connect and 30 to read. Catch requests.exceptions.ConnectTimeout and requests.exceptions.ReadTimeout separately so you know which phase hangs, and add a few spaced retries instead of removing the limit. See Python requests setup.
  • curl: --connect-timeout isolates the connection step, while -m caps the entire command.

Slow is not the same as silent

A slow proxy still replies, just late. The proxy speed test measures real response times. When they sit close to your software's limit, raise the limit or pick a proxy in a country nearer the target. When repeated tests never get any reply, it is a true timeout, and the next step is a support ticket that includes the checker result.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Confirm it in the checker

Paste the proxy line into the proxy checker. A timeout result means nothing came back within the wait limit.

  2. 2

    Change networks

Repeat the test on mobile data. If it passes, the original network or its firewall is responsible.

  3. 3

    Measure response times

Use the proxy speed test to tell a slow proxy from a silent one.

  4. 4

    Adjust limits and retries

Set the connect limit to about 10 seconds, add a few retries, and run your task again.

Frequently asked questions

Is my proxy dead if it times out?

Not necessarily. A large share of timeouts come from the user's own network blocking the port. Test from another network before you conclude anything.

What timeout values should I use with proxies in code?

Roughly 10 seconds to connect and 30 seconds to read is a reasonable start. Distant proxies or heavy pages may need longer.

Only a few websites time out through my proxy. Why?

Then the proxy works and those destinations are slow or blocking. If a site returns a 502 instead of silence, read 502 Bad Gateway.

How can I tell a timeout from a refused connection?

A refusal arrives straight away; a timeout only appears once the limit is reached. See proxy server refusing connections.

Choose an IP near your target

ProxyV4 has private IPv4 in the US, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the UK and Hong Kong, so you can keep the route short.
