Configuring a Proxy in Microsoft Edge Without Changing the Whole PC
Updated:
A Microsoft Edge proxy is normally the Windows or macOS system proxy, because Edge is built on Chromium and edge://settings/system simply hands you over to the operating system. If only Edge, or only one of its Work and Personal profiles, should go out through the proxy, use an extension or a launch flag. Then switch off Edge Secure Network, which can quietly replace your proxy IP with a Cloudflare one.
edge://settings/system > Open your computer's proxy settings (or browser extension)Choosing how far the proxy reaches
| Method | Other apps affected | Different IP per Edge profile | How the login is handled |
|---|---|---|---|
| FoxyProxy or SwitchyOmega add-on | No, only the profile it is installed in | Yes, Work and Personal can differ | Saved inside the extension |
| msedge.exe with --proxy-server | No, only that Edge window | Yes, with a separate --user-data-dir | Edge asks once in a sign-in prompt |
| edge://settings/system → system proxy | Yes, every app that follows Windows or macOS settings | No, one IP for the machine | Windows Credential Manager or macOS Keychain |
Getting Chrome Web Store add-ons into Edge
FoxyProxy Standard is listed in the Microsoft Edge Add-ons store. SwitchyOmega and other Chrome-only extensions install too: open the Chrome Web Store in Edge, accept the banner offering 'Allow extensions from other stores', then use the 'Add to Chrome' button. The SwitchyOmega and FoxyProxy guides walk through each extension's own screens.
A desktop shortcut per account
If you would rather avoid extensions, each shortcut below starts a self-contained Edge with its own data folder and proxy. Edge prompts for the proxy username and password the first time a page loads.
bash
# Windows: isolated Edge profile with its own proxy
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" ^
--user-data-dir="C:\edge-profiles\account-01" ^
--proxy-server="http://IP:PORT" ^
--disable-features=msEdgeSecureNetwork
Edge-specific leaks to close
- Microsoft Edge Secure Network. This built-in VPN, run with Cloudflare, lives under Settings → Privacy, search, and services. When it is on, traffic can leave through Cloudflare addresses instead of your proxy. Keep it off on any profile that uses a dedicated IP.
- WebRTC. Turn on 'Anonymize local IPs exposed by WebRTC' at
edge://flags/#enable-webrtc-hide-local-ips-with-mdns, or install a WebRTC limiter extension, then confirm with the WebRTC leak test.
Confirming the result
Load My IP in the proxied profile. You should see the ProxyV4 address and its country. Open the same page in a profile without the proxy; it should still show your own connection. If both show the proxy, you set it at system level rather than inside Edge. A Cloudflare address means Secure Network is still active.
Problems you may hit
- Login prompt repeats: the credentials are wrong or were pasted with a space; see 407 Proxy Authentication Required.
- Pages will not load at all: check the IP and port against Orders and work through ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED.
- Chrome changed IP too: you used
edge://settings/system, which edits the operating system proxy that Chrome also reads.
Step by step
- 1
Add a proxy extension to the Edge profile
Install FoxyProxy Standard from Microsoft Edge Add-ons, or allow extensions from other stores and add Proxy SwitchyOmega from the Chrome Web Store.
- 2
Enter the proxy details
Create an HTTP entry with the IP, port, username and password from your order and switch it on from the Edge toolbar.
- 3
Optional: use a flagged shortcut instead
Point a desktop shortcut at
msedge.exewith--user-data-dirand--proxy-server="http://IP:PORT"for profile isolation without add-ons. - 4
Turn off Edge Secure Network
Open
edge://settings/privacyand make sure 'Microsoft Edge Secure Network' is Off so the Cloudflare relay cannot override your proxy.
Frequently asked questions
Why does an IP checker in Edge show a Cloudflare address?
Edge Secure Network is probably on. Switch it off at edge://settings/privacy and reload the page.
Do Chrome Web Store proxy extensions work in Edge?
Yes. Allow extensions from other stores when Edge shows the banner on the Chrome Web Store, then install SwitchyOmega or FoxyProxy as usual.
If I set the proxy in edge://settings/system, does Chrome use it too?
Yes. That page opens the Windows or macOS network settings, which Edge and Chrome both follow by default. Use an extension if only Edge should change. The Windows guide explains the system proxy in detail.
Can my Work and Personal Edge profiles use different countries?
Yes. Install the extension in each profile and give each one a different proxy, for example a US IPv4 in one and a Japan IPv4 in the other.
Dedicated IPv4 for each Edge profile
Buy one IP or many, pay from one balance, and keep the same addresses when you renew. Proxies are usually issued within minutes.
