Putting Your iPhone or iPad on a Private Proxy
Updated:
iPhone proxy setup takes about a minute because iOS, unlike Android, has a login switch right in the Wi-Fi proxy screen: Configure Proxy → Manual, then turn on Authentication. That covers Safari and most apps on that Wi-Fi network. For cellular data, quick switching between several IPs, or a phone dedicated to social accounts, a proxy client such as Shadowrocket or Potatso does the job.
Settings > Wi-Fi > (i) > Configure Proxy > Manual > Server, Port, AuthenticationBuilt-in setting or a proxy app?
| Need | Wi-Fi → Configure Proxy | Shadowrocket or Potatso |
|---|---|---|
| Username and password | Yes, Authentication toggle | Yes, stored in the HTTP or HTTPS node |
| Works on 4G/5G | No, Wi-Fi only | Yes, Wi-Fi and cellular |
| Changing between proxies | Retype per Wi-Fi network | One tap, with a latency test |
| Typical user | Safari browsing, one account | Several regions, TikTok and Instagram work |
What to enter in Shadowrocket
Your proxy line has four parts: ip:port:user:pass. In Shadowrocket add a node and map them like this, then set global routing to Proxy so every app uses it:
bash
Type: HTTP (or HTTPS)
Address: <PROXY_IP>
Port: <PROXY_PORT>
User: <PROXY_USERNAME>
Password: <PROXY_PASSWORD>
Global Routing: Proxy
Apple features that hide or replace your proxy
- iCloud Private Relay (Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Private Relay) sends Safari through Apple's relay servers, so websites see a relay address instead of your proxy. Turn it off while you work.
- Limit IP Address Tracking in the Wi-Fi network's details can have a similar effect in Safari. Switch it off on the network you proxied.
- Region signals. For region-specific accounts such as TikTok US or UK, set Settings → General → Language & Region to the proxy's country, turn off Location Services for that app, and remove or disable the local SIM line so the carrier does not contradict the IP.
Check the result in Safari
After saving, open My IP. It should show the proxy address and the country you ordered, such as a Singapore IPv4. If you see your home ISP, Private Relay or Limit IP Address Tracking is still on, or the phone has quietly moved to cellular.
Remember that the setting is saved per Wi-Fi network (SSID). A new network means a direct connection until you configure it there too.
If the iPhone will not connect
- Safari says it cannot open the page: a typo in Server or Port, or an expired order. Recheck the values in Orders and see connection failed.
- Repeated password requests: the Username or Password field holds an auto-capitalised letter or trailing space. More on 407 errors.
- Pages load very slowly or time out: run the line through the proxy checker from a computer to see whether the proxy or the Wi-Fi is the problem; timeout causes are listed here.
Step by step
- 1
Open the Wi-Fi network details
In the Settings app tap Wi-Fi, then tap the blue (i) next to the network you are connected to.
- 2
Switch Configure Proxy to Manual
Scroll to the bottom, tap 'Configure Proxy' and change it from Off to 'Manual'.
- 3
Fill in server, port and login
Type the proxy IP in 'Server' and the port in 'Port'. Turn 'Authentication' on and enter the username and password from your order.
- 4
Save and verify
Tap 'Save' at the top right, then open https://proxyv4.com/tools/proxy-checker in Safari to confirm the new IP and location.
Frequently asked questions
Does the proxy follow me to another Wi-Fi network or to cellular?
No. iOS stores it per Wi-Fi network. To keep a proxy on every connection, including 4G/5G, use Shadowrocket or Potatso.
Why does Safari show a different IP from my proxy?
iCloud Private Relay or the Wi-Fi option 'Limit IP Address Tracking' is probably on. Turn both off while you use a dedicated proxy.
Will the iPhone ask for the proxy password again?
Sometimes Safari asks once on the first connection to store the login in the keychain. Tap 'Log In' and it is remembered.
Can I use different proxies for different iPhone apps?
Not with the built-in setting, which applies to the whole Wi-Fi network. Proxy client apps let you switch nodes quickly; for many separate identities a desktop antidetect browser is easier to manage.
