Datacenter, ISP or Residential: Three Kinds of Proxy IP Explained
Updated:
ISP vs datacenter vs residential proxy is a question of IP origin. A datacenter proxy uses an address owned by a hosting company, a residential proxy borrows a real household's connection, and an ISP proxy (also called static residential) carries an address registered to a consumer internet provider while running on a server. In short: datacenter is fastest and cheapest, residential looks most like a home user but rarely stays put, and ISP gives you a home-provider address that does not change.
Every IP has a public owner
Address blocks are registered to organisations, and the registry is open. Any lookup service will tell you which network an IP belongs to, identified by its ASN (autonomous system number), and whether that network is a cloud or hosting company or a consumer broadband or mobile carrier. You can see this yourself in the IP lookup tool.
Platforms read the same record. Hosting networks are where servers, bots and corporate systems live; consumer networks are where people browse from their sofas. Neither origin is good or bad on its own. What counts is whether it matches what the platform expects for that kind of activity.
Datacenter proxies: server IPs, server performance
A datacenter proxy runs in a professional data centre on an address the hosting provider owns. You get low latency, a stable connection and the lowest price per IP. The variable that matters most is tenancy. A shared datacenter IP inherits whatever other customers did with it; a private one, rented to a single customer, starts with no stranger's history attached.
- Where it shines: speed, stability, wide country choice, and bandwidth that is often unmetered.
- Where it struggles: the hosting origin is obvious, and a few strict platforms add checks for traffic from server networks.
- Typical jobs: scraping, rank tracking, automation tools, everyday browsing and a large share of multi-account work.
Residential proxies: someone else's home connection
Residential networks route your traffic through real household devices, usually ones whose owners joined an opt-in programme. The exit is a genuine home user, which is why it looks so natural.
- Where it shines: the most authentic-looking addresses, spread across many cities.
- Where it struggles: devices go offline whenever their owners switch them off, so addresses rotate or expire within minutes or hours; throughput varies; billing is commonly per GB.
- Typical jobs: very large data collection on heavily defended sites where a new IP per request helps.
ISP proxies: home-provider IP, data centre stability
An ISP proxy takes the useful half of each model. The address is registered to a consumer provider, so a lookup shows a telecom rather than a host. But it is announced from a server, not a living room, so it does not vanish when a router reboots. You keep the same address for the whole rental.
- Where it shines: consumer ASN, a fixed address and server-grade speed.
- Where it struggles: fewer countries and a higher price than datacenter, because clean consumer-registered blocks are hard to source.
- Typical jobs: long-lived accounts on platforms that are touchy about hosting IPs, such as social networks, ad platforms and marketplace seller centres.
The three types in one table
Read this as a starting point, not a verdict. Outcomes depend on the platform, the account's history and the browser profile as much as on the IP.
| Datacenter | ISP (static residential) | Residential | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registered to | Hosting company | Consumer internet provider | Consumer internet provider |
| Runs on | Server in a data centre | Server in a data centre | A real home device |
| Address over time | Fixed for the rental | Fixed for the rental | Usually rotates or expires |
| Speed and stability | High | High | Variable |
| Usual billing | Per IP per month | Per IP per month | Often per GB |
| Cost per IP | Lowest | Medium to high | Depends on traffic used |
| Natural fit | Scraping, SEO, tools, many accounts | High-value, long-term accounts | Massive rotating collection |
Matching the type to your workload
- Many accounts across platforms: begin on private datacenter IPs and move the most sensitive accounts to ISP. See multi-account and MMO.
- Ad accounts and social commerce: an ISP address in the account's own country gives the most home-like footprint. See Facebook Ads and TikTok Shop.
- Scraping and rank tracking: datacenter IPs usually give the best cost per request. See web scraping and SEO and SERP tracking.
- Games: a datacenter IP near the game server keeps ping low. See gaming.
- Still undecided: buy one or two of each and run them through the real workflow before you scale.
What no IP type can promise
No address makes an account untouchable. Platforms combine the IP with cookies, browser fingerprint, device signals and behaviour. A good proxy removes one obvious link between accounts. The rest is on you: a separate antidetect profile per account, a time zone and language that match the IP's country, and activity that looks like a person. The AdsPower setup page shows how to wire a proxy into a profile correctly.
Where ProxyV4 fits
ProxyV4 sells the two server-hosted types and does not sell residential. Private datacenter IPv4 is available in the United States, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. Static ISP is available in the United States and Vietnam.
Both are single-tenant for the whole rental, keep the same address while active, and include unlimited bandwidth. Renew before expiry and you keep the exact IPs, so an account's login history stays consistent. Jump straight to Vietnam ISP or US datacenter IPv4 to see live prices.
Frequently asked questions
Are ISP proxies and residential proxies the same thing?
They share a consumer-provider origin, but an ISP proxy runs on a server and keeps one address, while a residential proxy runs through real home devices and usually changes address.
Do datacenter proxies work for social media accounts?
Yes, plenty of social accounts run on private datacenter IPs. Some platforms are stricter with hosting networks, so the most valuable accounts can be moved to ISP addresses.
Why do ISP proxies cost more than datacenter proxies?
Clean blocks registered to consumer providers are scarce for proxy companies, so supply is smaller and each address costs more.
How do I find out whether an IP is ISP or datacenter?
Look up the IP's organisation in the IP lookup tool or the proxy checker. A telecom name points to ISP; a hosting or cloud company points to datacenter.
Which of the three is fastest?
Datacenter and ISP are both server-hosted and fast. Residential depends on the household connection behind each address and varies widely.
Can one antidetect browser use different proxy types?
Yes. Every profile has its own proxy, so you can put sensitive accounts on ISP addresses and the rest on datacenter IPv4.
